In Loving Memory

Sean MacIntosh

April 4, 1966 to August 28, 2009

A good man, a beautiful heart, a wonderful voice, and the best of friends!
Sean was always careful to consider the feelings of others.  He loved life!
Our lives will be lesser without him in the world.

"Good-night! good-night! as we so oft have said
Beneath this roof at midnight, in the days
That are no more, and shall no more return.
Thou hast but taken up thy lamp and gone to bed;
I stay a little longer, as one stays
To cover up the embers that still burn."
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

We love you and you will be missed!

Hello everybody!

This year, I am thankful for all of the family and friends I have.  I would like to thank every one of them for being in my life.  Even when they piss me off, I know it is because they have their reasons.

I am thankful for Wifey Cat being in my life.  This year has been especially stressful for us, and she has been there, even when I have been acting like a jackass and having a nervous tantrum.  I love you, Wifey Cat!

I am thankful to have been born and raised in a country where individuals have so many rights and freedoms, and where those rights and freedoms are also balanced against individual responsibilities.

So that leads into the topic of the federal election in our country.  Certainly, it has been overshadowed by the interminable coverage of the U.S. election, but I have been trying to sift through material to make my decision about who will receive my vote.  I believe I have made my choice, and it is my right to keep that secret.

Those who know me might say I am a weird mix of "left" and "right" ideals, but I think those definitions are artificial and designed to strip you of your choice to think critically.  I also think those who join one political party for life, regardless of the current candidates, issues, and their own place in life, have voluntarily abdicated their right to make critical choices.  Perhaps I don't play that game well, or perhaps I am playing my own game by my own rules.  The only reward one should expect from a democratic government is good government.

In my opinion, favours, cronyism, and patronage erode our government and the people's confidence in it.  Tomorrow, exercise your democratic right and go vote for the candidate you feel will best represent your interests to our country's parliament.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Rules: Post three things you've done that you believe nobody else on your F-list has done. Indulge in remorse if someone calls you out on a listed item.

1.  Shaved my head in the eighties, while under the impression that I should be wearing leather and chains.

2.  Bleached a blonde stripe front the bangs down the back of my head (2 inches wide).  Interesting effect with my dark brown hair contrasting the white stripe, especially when my hair was just growing in and all standing up on end.

3.  Had old worned out knee replaced with new stainless steel one.  Liked it so much, I am having the other one done.

Lat night Hubby and I went to the Baroque Lute Concert.  It was wonderful.  First there was a lecture about baroque music and how it is the "Jazz" of the Renaissance period, as well as the Lute itself and how it was once the most common played instrument in the world to a very rare instrument.

The musician was Michel Cardin who is a Professor of Music at the University of Moncton.   His credentials' list was about as long as my arm.  His talent was masterful.  It was wonderful just to sit in the auditorium with your eyes closed, listening to the soft nuances of the finger plucking.  At one point you would have swore that there were two seperate insturuments playing two different yet complimenting pieces of work.  It was phenominal!  I am sorry that others were not able to partake of this little pleasure.

Here is his website if anyone is interested in his music.

Subject:MY BOOK ARE HERE!

OOOOOOOOO!   OHHHHHHHHHH!  I am so excited!!!  My books came today.  (All but one).  The books on costuming are lovely and very thorough.  The were all originally published before 1937, and I understand that there are mostly like some things that have been refuted, however, they give a good direction is what way to go in recreating items of clothing.  It is interesting to note that the bog tunics are not mentioned in any of the books.  In 2 of the 5 books on costuming there are sections on embroidery which is of great interest to me.  They are all definitely good resources in reconstructing a piece from painting.  They all have wonderful bibliographies and we have several great libraries close by to borrow from or to spend an afternoon in a rare book section perrusing shelves.

Also that came is my beginner's guide to Stumpwork.  It too is a lovely book, and I can see exact how to create these works of art from the directions.  I think it is a great place for me to begin.  The Dragonflies are admourable, and the pansies and roses gorgeous.  I love the 3 dimensional aspect of them all.  The mind is a twitter with ideas of possible projects.

The one that I haven't received yet is the book on Canvaswork.  I can't wait for that one.  That is the project I am working on right now.  It is a series of strawberries, so might even call it a petit point.  It is 28ct and I am doing it over 1 thread.  I am using hardarger cloth.  Man is it pretty.  "Even if I do say so myself".  I am making a pin cushion when all is said and done.

This morning I spent it smocking gores for the shift that I am fixing.  It will be good when it is done, I am sure that I will feel a true sense of accomplishment when I have it completed as well as the report.  Soon!  Maybe this week, maybe next week.  But very soon!

Subject:NEW BOOKS
Time:11:34 am
Current Mood:[mood icon] contemplative
Today I bought some new books on Amazon.  They are all books on Medieval costumes, and how to create them.  I really didn't have much in the line of books on costumes, with some advice from Maestressa Elena I thought I better check into this area.  I bought five books.  One on her specific recommendation, but the others on some research.  They are:
1.  Cut my Cote by Dorothy K Burnham
2.  Historic Costumes and How to make them by Mary Fernald
3.  Medieval Costume and How to recreate it by Dorothy Hartley
4.  Medieval Costume and Fashion by Herbert Norris
5.  Medieval Costume in England and France: The 13th, 14th, and 15th Centuries. by Mary G Houston

I should have them sometime next week.  I think that this will be it for the buying of books in costuming.  From this point on I will save my dough and buy book on Embroderies and such for embellishing the pieces that I make.

Pani Danuska brought some books to A&S last night to show to me.  A couple of which we loan me to have a closer look at.  One was on smocking and the other on canvas work.  She has a beautiful one on Stumpwork.  I read it while there.  I gave me some great ideas.  I have an idea in mind.  I think that it is duable.  Your opinion please.

I have a piece of light grey almost white kid leather (like a shamee), it came out of a coat.  it laid in the back over the shoulders to stop the wind in a wool coat.  Anyway, I want to make a glove (man's) out of the leather, which a long cuff, and I want to applique a flower on the cuff.  Sort of like the queen's favour that Lady Griet did and panelled at AT.  Has anyone sewn with this kind of leather.  I can't imagine that it would be as difficult as the heavier leather.  Do you have any advice?

This was copied from a posting to the Shire of Lyndhaven public list.
These are wonderful words from our great King and Queen!

Unto the populace of Lyndhaven,

This April past we had the pleasure of visiting your fair lands
and holding a tourney to determine our heirs. Right away we were
surrounded by hospitality and good times at dinner in the pub and
prerev Friday night. I would hope to imbue the rest of my kingdom with
the friendly spirit we experienced. During the early part of the event
day Queen Brenwen was delighted with her Queen's tea, while this was
the first tea held for her as Queen she as attended at many before and
she has said that this was by far the finest she had witnessed. The
tourney itself went smoothly and we were blessed with Darius and
Alethea as our Prince and Princess. The feast was excellent, even more
so considering the "vanishing oven" hurdle the staff had to deal with.
During the feast we had the pleasure to meet many people and see some
of our peers take students. The whole weekend we were treated very
well and made to feel at home. A great deal of planning, preparation
and effort went into making this day possible and we would like to say
THANK YOU!
We look forward to when we can visit you and hope see those of
you who can make it at Pennsic,

Subject:RUMOURS AND INNUENDOES!
Time:07:16 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] infuriated
Once again the "Rumour Mill" is at again, and for sanity sake I am quashing these rumours.  The reason why I am doing this is because over the weeks preceeding Spring Crown tourney, at the event itself, and now the weeks following the event, I had remained fairly quiet.  I did not want to, in any way, embarrass or anger those I love and respect.  However, the tide has turned, and I am completely fed up with the pettiness of the two individuals that have such shallow, pitiful, and sad lives that they have to find fault with those who are doing there best to make fun events.

Rumour # 1.
(This one effects me mostly and my helpers.)  The Dayboard was mostly prepared by the Kitchen Staff for the Feast.  This is an out and out lie.  There is absolutely no truth to this statement.  It not only shows a disservice to myself, but it shows a huge disservice to the lovely ladies that helped me.  All the cooking and prep-work was done in my home, (my guests can vouche for that) and Lady Mary Elizabeth, the wonderful lady that she is worked her ass off helping me on Friday.  On Saturday, Lady Mary Elizabeth and Pani Danuska and Mason handled the Day board by themselves.  I can not express how wonderful these three people are in their help to me.  I am sure that Lady Griet can vouche for us as well, in the fact that no one from the kitchen staff help in the production of the Dayboard.

Rumour # 2.
The Shuttles were not annouced.  Yes they were.  Matter of fact, I heard the annoucement from across the Drill Hall, Mateo announced that the shuttle service would be at the main door, and that they would not take people to McDonald's, the Mall, or the Liquor Store, however they would take them back to their motels, accommodations, or the feast hall.  Also it was posted on the website for the event.

Rumour # 3.
There was no signage.  Granted, but the individual who had the signs forgot to being them, and he lived an hour away from the sight, we did not feel that it was warranted to send him back.  For the inconvenience we apologize.  To our knowledge no one spent the day spining circle trying to get to the site.  To our knowledge everyone arrived.

Rumour # 4.
All but three volunteers were incompetent.   All the volunteers are listed here in this missive.  They are:  Lady Griet, Natali'a,  Lord Patrick, Jacquelle, Lady Catte, Lady Inga, Lord Snarfi, Jay Whitcher, Lady Washa of Tyr, Master Henry, Elizabeth of Cathair Dubh, Pani Danuska, Lady Mary Elizabeth, Lady Zelina, Manfred, Lady Effric, Mason, India, Baroness Lyanna, Baron Hensojin, Lord Aethelwulf, Lady Aurelia, Master Aetheric, Lady Allessandra, Lord Mateo, Lord Faolsean, Lady Estrella ( East Kingdom MOL), Baron Ernest (Herald), Master Padraig (East Kingdom Earl Marshall), All the list runners who's names escape me, All the Marshalls in total, All the list Heralds, All the musicans that have not been named, Wanda Atkinson (Kitchen), Christina Reid (Kitchen), Lord Diairmait o"Briain, Lord Takimori, The Athena's Thimble group, The fighters, The clean up crew provided by the base, Lord Conogan, and myself.  I apologize to those who I have forgotten, it isn't intentional only old age.  Now my point is, out of this list, which of these people are the incompetent ones, and which are the competent ones?  You tell me.  I think they are all competent!!!!!!!

Rumour # 5.
The Autocrat was incompetent.  This is a blanket statement saying nothing.  Now what would have been constructive is saying how he was incompetent.  I have been to a lot of event in my time.  People do not usually notice me there because I like to be behind the scenes.  I have even run a few events in my day.  Spring Crown Tourney was one of the nicest events I have been to, ever.  This is including an event or two ran by the two people that started these rumours in the first place.  My comment to this is, "People in glass houses shouldn't through stones."  I believe they have a couple of events coming up in the near future.

Rumour # 6.
The Royals were unhappy with the price of their suite.  Their suite was paid for by the "Northern Shores Royal Travel Fund" using the money that was collect at the Silent Auction.  They have no reason to be unhappy.  I don't believe that they even said this.  This too smells like a lie.

Rumour # 7.
The Royals were displease with the fact that they didn't have a private car.  I also believe that this too smells like a lie.  If they were unhappy then they should have asked for a private car in the co-ordination of the event, or even ask it of the Royal Liaison seeing it would have been the Royal Liaison's responsibility to co-ordinate this privilege.

Rumour # 8.
There was no one designated to clean up the Royal's Suite when they left.  This too is not true, Lord Conogan did it himself, but it is not like him to "Crow" about the things that he has done.  He was there he had to pick up the Royals to deliever them to the airport, so he cleared the room for check out.

Rumour # 9.
The Royals apparently said that "This was the worse event that we have ever attended, and we will not be returning to Lyndhaven again, and we will be telling those who come after us that they should not come here either!"    I believe that this smells a bit like a lie too.  It is just the work of petty individuals trying despritely to make themselves look good when they know that they are not shining to well these days.

There were more but I have forgotten them now, but it was more of the same.

Now that I have had the chance to vent all of this, I hope that the public conscienous edits their opinions to include these points.  It would be a shame that the huge group of volunteers, and attendees ended up coming away with bad feelings from this wonderful event.

Yesterday I bought myself my first set of old lady's glasses.  I am at that stage of my life that I can no longer see in the same way that I use to.  My arms just don't seem to be long enough.  I was at my brother's house on Sunday, and he was going through the exact same thing as I am going through now.  We are only 18 months apart.  He had the surgery, and now he needs the little glasses to read the paper.  I where contacts, and need the glasses for needle work and for reading.  It is amazing how things change when you hit 40!

Subject:MORTALITY!
Time:02:48 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] contemplative

Yesterday would have been my father's 81st birthday if he was still alive today.  This Sunday in Mother's Day and because my mother is getting up there in years, we all try to get over to see her in order to let her know how much we appreciate her.  Monday would have been my grandmother's birthday if she was still living.  My grandmother was my most favorite person in the world.

Mortality has really made a point of poking at me this year.  As I age, my loved ones are aging with me.  Well Duh, but being the youngest in my family, and as the members of my family depart, really emphasizes how quickly they "all" will be gone.  How precious time is and that I don't have much left with them.  I have known these people all my life, how strange it will be when I can't say that anymore.

I try and remember the birthdays of those who have come and gone before me.  It is a reminder to myself how important these people were in moulding me into the person I am today.  Whether good or bad, their influence has had an effect on my life, which created my drive and ambition to be the best person I can be.

So, to those before me, Cheers!  Although life is not perfect, it is a good one.

Subject:I started "It" finally!
Time:10:12 am
Current Mood:[mood icon] contemplative
Now that Crown is finally over, and most of the clean up in my house is done, I have finally started my project, "The 12th Century Viking Styled Tunic with Pleated Trews, Phrygian Cap, and Puttees.

I have all the materials that will be needed in order to complete this project, unless of course I run out of thread.  Which we know that will happen.

I have completed the designed of the Visigothic styled trim of columns and archways.

The trim will be done in wool on a linen backgrown, but I am working up a sample piece in cotton thread so I don't waste the precious wool.  It is simply too hard to come by.  I am working the thread in a split stitch fashion because I don't want the thread to pull wihile it is being worn.  I think that keeping everything tight is important.

I am also working on the handmade cording that I am making to couche around the gores and in between the handmade linen bias ribbons for the trim around the neck and the head opening of the cap.  No pics as yet on the cord or the ribbons.  I have approximately 5 ft of cording completed.  It had to be done in section because it will tangle so badly I would never get it untied.

By the end of the week, I will have both the tunic and the cap cut out.  I am using the Birka tunic style pattern.  It is easy to cut out and put together, but mostly because the Hubby finds the style very comfortable to wear.  It will have four sets of gores that will be smock for the ease of placement.  Seeing that he will be wearing the outfit when completed, he has had a lot of imput on the basic design, colour, and decorations.

The tunic will be in 100 % linen of a dark teal colour, the trews will be 100 % linen of a red colour, with yellow puttees again in 100 % linen, and the phrygian cap will also be in 100 % linen in dark teal.  I am absolutely postive that he will look like Papa Smurff when all is said and done.  Unfortunately, he has long since shaved off his beard and therefore has gone clean shaven for the last year.  Oh well.

I am still trying to decide what kind of black work pattern to use when embroidering the seams.  I am thinking a nice simple leaf motif, by maybe I should do something truly viking like animal heads or something of that nature.  I was looking for something that wasn't too complicated, meaning time consuming, but I guess that it will all be time consuming.

Estimate time line on project - 1-1/2 to 2 years.

Although I want to get a good start on this project now, most of it will be complete while convillasing from my next surgery in the fall.

I have also start my journal and documention write up, and I am still continuing on the research even though I have a lot of research done to this point.

Question:  Is it appropriate to mix century's when you are in the same culture?  Example the Birka tunic is roughly 8th to 10 th Century, but the Hubby's persona is 11th century, the trews are about 12th century, and so on.  Can this be done?

Lately, I have been feeling like winter would never end, and all of a sudden the Robins are here, even though the snowbirds are still here (I think they are confused) and we have patches of snow.   It is really funny to see a flock of snowbirds feeding under the feeder, and right behind them a robin is pulling a worm out of the ground.  Where is the camera when you need one?

Yesterday, Hubby and I went for a drive, and I noticed that we didn't need any heat on in the car.  Matter of fact, I had to take my sweater off, because a t-shirt was more then plenty.  When we got back,  and after taking in the nice fresh smelling laundry off the line, I sat outside on the bench, sunning my face, watching the "two fat cats" prowling around the yard, meowing freedom.  I knew at that moment that spring was truly here.  Yesterday it was a +12 C in our back yard.  Today it is suppose to be warmer than that.  Yeah!  Tomorrow even warmer.  Yeah even more!

I am here to officially announce that SPRING is finally here!!!!!!

You know you are middle-aged when the young punks in the neighbourhood start to bother you.
I was cleaning up the yard yesterday, one of the first truly beautiful spring days we've had.  There were three adolescent boys down the hill in the daycare playground (private property, and marked as such).  I was keeping an eye on them, but I wasn't going to do anything.  You see, this daycare had called in a completely baseless complaint about our dog several years ago.  Before that point, I was a very proactive neighbour in their defence.  Since then, I have not.

So I watched as the boys knocked over a big plastic doll house, climbed over and through another plastic house, and hanged from their basketball hoop.  I wanted to keep an eye on them, but otherwise didn't want to get involved.  My neighbour, though, called down to them and reminded them it was private property.  I believe I heard one of them say, "f*ck off, old man".  At that point, I had had enough.  No one insults my neighbour like that and gets away with it.  He is a gentle, sincere, and friendly guy for whom I have a lot of respect.

I went straight inside and called the cops.  I let them know what I saw and heard, and they were over in a very short time.  The constable knew the three youths (not in a good way), and thanked me for calling.  I'll have to put in a written testimony, and perhaps testify.  The way I see it, if this process scares them enough to make them respectful of others, it was worth it.

I hope that is what they take away from this experience.

Subject:A wonderful find!
Time:02:51 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] excited
After the EKU weekend, heading home, we stopped into Salisbury to visit with my Mum.  I try to do that every chance I get.  After all she is "up there" in age, and one never knows how long we will have her around.

While at Mum's, she brings out this large box o' stuff for me to take home.  You see she has been combing through her sewing room, depensing with stuff that she feels she no longer needs or wants.  Anyway, I pack up the box, and bring it home, and there it sits in my livingroom for about a week while I try and get over this cold.  On Monday, having felt human for the first time in a week, I decided to go through the box to see what was there, and I came across several interesting things.  Among the stuff there is:

1.  Two lage rolls of applique paper.  You know the kind, you iron it on to a piece of material, pull off the paper and iron the material to another piece of material.   I thought to myself, I can always use that.  Matter of fact was looking for some of it and couldn't find it.  Ta Da, and there it is.  A find!

2.  A book on quilting.  The different techniques and stitches and such.  Quilting is something that I have alway appreciated but never did.  My mother and my grangmother have quilted all my life, but I never did.  I will now.  A Find!

3.  A kit for a jumper for a 4 to 6 year old girl.  It is red corduroy with a blue transfer of cats and flowers.  Complete with a headband and purse.  I can zip that up on the serger, and in a hour with a couple of breaks to scratch a cat or two, it is done.  A gift for a little girl, or even to sell it.  A find!

4.  Iron on Transfers.  These are from the 70's, I would say.  You iron them on pillow cases, hand towls, tea towel, table runner, etc, and embroider them.    They make great wedding gifts, shower gifts, or just plain gifts.  I can sell them.  A Find!

5.  The biggest find of all.  There was an envelope, address to my grandmother's second husband's first wife.  (Now say that fast!)  The envelope was postage stamped October 27, 1925.  In the envelope, was and is several fold piece of waxed stamped tissues paper.  These transfers are for making table clothes.  I originally thought that they were for embroidery, but after looking at them for a while, I have come to the conclusion that they are patterns for doing open linen, pulled, and lace work.  The amazing thing is, this is an area that I wanted to start working on but I didn't know what kind of project to do in order to start.  How perfect is that?  The project is right there in front of me.  Interesting don't you think?  It is definitely a true FIND!

Picture of the tablecloth patterns transfers are below.

The first one is a Flowered window pane.  There are four transfers identical.  One for each corner.

The second one is of a tea set.  There are four transfers, the tea pot, the sugar bowl, the creamer, and the teacup and saucer.  In the middle of each on is the transfer for the napkins to match.  Those are all the same.

I am thinking, so that I don't ruin something that is an antique, I am going to copy the patterns on transfer paper, and use the copies for the patterns.  I would like to preserve these.  A little history if you may.

A DEFINITE TRUE FIND!  THANK YOU MUM!

That pretty much goes without saying.  What really puts it over the top is when both you and your spouse are sick.  Who is supposed to take care of whom?  We've been trying to take care of each other, but today I just had to take a day off work and get some extra sleep.

There is practically nothing I have ever taken in terms of medicine that tops sleep.  I have felt just about near death, and after 12 hours of sleep I have felt 100% better.  And sometimes the crazy dreams from having a fever are quite the hoot!  It is like a running series of "in" jokes with yourself.

What really sucks is when you have responsibilities that cannot be postponed.  Tomorrow I have to head to class for 9 hours.  I'm sure the others in the class are not really going to enjoy sitting near a carrier, but I don't happen to have $7500 in loose change around the house.

Ah well, I had better get some sleep.  Perchance to dream...

Today is a new day but feeling no better.  Now Hubby is home sick.  Although he isn't having the fever and the sweats like I am, he is coughing up a lung or two.  He figures it is one of those super virui.  It is a really good reason why one should get the flu shot.  Something to remember for next fall when it is time to get the shot.

Betty is better by the way.  I wonder how long this will last.  Probably until our next trip. HA!

Oh my god, I don't know who I got it from, but kindly take it back.  I don't think that I ever felt some horrible.  A very wet and juicy cold that has set in permenantly in my chest.  Hubby is the same way too.  Last night the both of us laying in bed shivering and body rushes of chills, burning us with low grade temperatures. The pair of us aren't what you would say good for anything right now, but at least he has gone to work.  Scheesh!

On top of all that, Betty has to have a wheel bearing replace in her front right tire.  Well, I guess we shouldn't complain, she is a ten year old car.  Oh well.  It just seems lately that every time we go away, the car breaks down.  At Christmas, we went to the Island, and the Waterpump went.  In February we went to the Holiday Ball in Holton, Maine and we got a flat tire ending up in replacing all four tire.  This past weekend to Pictou, Nove Scotia and it is a wheel bearing.  Scheesh.

I shouldn't complain, she has been a really good car, and she will have to do for the next while.   Praise Betty!

This past weekend, as most of you know, my hubby and I went to EKU in Ruantallan.  What a wonderful time we had.  With hubby finally receiving his AOA, and enjoying some classes, I came away feeling completely inspired.  These days, it is rare that I come to that wonderful point and feel much inspired about anything.  This weekend was different, and I actually came away inspired to continue.

First and foremost, Esperanza taught a lovely class on Doll Making.  Ever since I was a small child, I have collected dolls.  I have hundreds of them of all shapes and sizes, porcelain, vinyls, rubbers, and stuffs, and some newish and most antiques.  By having the interest in the dolls, I have developed a desired to make my own.  So I have design a "medieval ragged doll" series.  They are really cute.  Esperanza's class showed me that I wasn't off on my design in what makes it a medieval styled doll.  That made me feel quite good about the dolls.  They are pictured below.

Please over look the fact that they are naked.  The clothing hadn't been made at the time of the picture.  They are dressed in Cotehardies now.

Esperanza also showed me how to do this wonderful stitch for embroidery.  It is the missing stitch.  One that I have been hunting for, for a myriad of different projects.  It is what I call the back split stitch.  I will be spending this week trying to perfect it.  Wish me luck.

As usual I was inspired by Maestressa Elena.  Her encouragement is everlasting, and guidance is always appreciated.  I am sure that by the time the 12th Century tunic is completed, she will be so tired of hearing about it, but she never shows it, and always seems eager to listen when I talk about it.  I thank her for that.

Also, I was inspired by King Andreas and Queen Gabreilla.  When they thanked the group of ladies that did all the work in making their Coronation Garb.  It made me feel appreicated and that all the hard work that each and every one of us did, did not go unnotice.  The thank you was greatly appreciated.

Well, now that we are safe at home, and have slept a night in our own bed, I feel that I can honestly get up tomorrow and spend the day in my studio, doing what it is, that I do, create!
